Portman Press Bureau – closed when plate cameras gave way to film

By January 3, 2017 September 18th, 2017 Will Carleton

Hello Will,

I notice you have a few queries about Portman Press Bureau where I worked in the fifties and sixties.

It was the largest firm of Society wedding photographers in London and was a family firm, build up from it’s beginnings in the 1920’s in Portman Square, hence the name. It’s demise came about when plate cameras gave way to film and the family retired. There were branches of the firm in Dorset and Cambridgeshire.

Regards,

Janet O

and this from Doug Scott who also worked at Portman – and Belgrave Press

Fifty years ago I worked for the Belgrave Press Bureau, 7 West Halkin St, SW1, I believe that it & the Portman Press Bureau were amalgamated sometime later, the owner was Mr Ernest Cuthbert, (address unknown or whether still living) he had a wife and son Anthony (ditto above.)
My work history with BPB was for three years 1994-97
Regards
Doug Scott
