Press Prints

Press Print verso close up – Allied activity June 7 1944 France – the day after D Day.
A batch of press prints mainly from Planet News, including a few from BIPPA and general Pool photos, has arrived in the Press Photo History Project post this week sent by the son of Joyce Farmer who worked at the Fleet Street photo agency very briefly towards the end of the war.
Joyce died recently and the prints were found amongst her possessions by her son Alan who then googled the Planet landing at the Press Photo History project and contacting us. “I think it was one of her first jobs (she was 18 at the time) and I don’t think it lasted very long. I remember her telling me she had seen some of the first awful photos that came out of the German extermination camps, and how disgusted she had been. None of those photos are in this bunch I have, though – they mainly seem to be war machinery and government building schemes like a picture of one of the first prefabs.”
Thanks Alan, and wonderful to think Joyce kept these images with her throughout her life!
